NL East Showdown on Tap as Washington Visits NY Mets (07/12/2018)
Vegas Odds and MLB Picks: Washington Nationals at NY Mets
The Washington Nationals will attempt to get back into the winner’s circle and finish the first half of the season in winning fashion as they get ready to resume hostilities with the New York Mets. The two NL East Division rivals are scheduled to compete in the first installment of a four-game series with the contest set to be broadcasted by the MASN and Sportsnet networks Thursday night at 7:10 p.m. ET and live from Citi Field in Flushing, NY.
This will be the third of six series between the two division belligerents this season. The Mets swept a three-game set against the Nationals in the nation’s capital in early April. A week later, the two sides met again for another three-game set in New York with the Nationals winning the first two games before the Mets avoiding the sweep with an 11-5 victory in the finale. The Nationals have thrived in the Big Apple winning ten of the last thirteen contests in New York.
The Nationals, who will finish the first half of the season away from the nation’s capital, enter this contest as a -215 road favorite, according to Bovada Sportsbook, with the total sitting on 7 runs. RH Max Scherzer (11-5, 2.33 ERA) will attempt to capture back-to-back victories as he takes the mound for the Nationals while LH Steven Matz (4-6, 3.31 ERA) will look to rebound from latest loss as he gets the call in the series’ opener for the Mets.
Despite the win in his last outing, Scherzer saw his quality start streak snapped at seven games in his last trip to the mound. The 33-year old allowed four runs across seven hits, which three leaving the yard, with two walks and a season-low three strikeouts in an 18-4 win against the Marlins back on Saturday. The Missouri native, who will face the Mets for the first time this year, is 8-4 with 2.27 ERA in 14-career starts against the Mets.
Matz has been on a nice run of late lowering his ERA from 4.42 to 3.31 in his last 10 starts while allowing only 6 homeruns in 57 innings during that stretch. The 27-year old allowed a run across 5 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings in a 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay back on Saturday. The New York native, who didn’t factor in the decision in 2 starts against the Nationals this year, is 1-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 6-career starts vs. Washington.
