This will be the fourth of six series between the two division belligerents this season. The Indians swept the Tigers in a four-game set early in April on home soil. The Tigers rebounded by taking two of three at home in mid-May, but lost their latest series 2-1 a couple weeks ago. The Indians have dominated the rivalry of late winning 14 of the last 17 contests against Detroit. The Tigers enter this showdown having lost their last two games.
The Indians, who are in the middle of a nine-game home stand, enter this affair as a -200 home favorite, according to Bovada Sportsbook, with the total sitting on 9.5 runs. RH Mike Fiers (5-3, 4.09 ERA) will attempt to get back into the winner’s circle as he takes the mound for the Tigers while RH Shane Bieber (1-0, 3.97 ERA) will look to capture back-to-back victories as he gets the call in the series opener for the Indians.
After a couple of miscues in which he allowed a total of eight runs in 12 1/3 innings, Fiers settled down in his last four starts by going 1-0 with a respectable 2.66 ERA during that stretch. The 33-year old allowed 3 runs on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox a week ago. The Florida native, who is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 2 starts this year against Cleveland, is 3-1 with a 2.04 ERA in 6-career starts against the Indians.
Bieber, who made his major league debut back on May 31, was recalled June 17 to make his second career start against the Twins. The 23-year old allowed a run across 10 hits and 7 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings for his first career win against Minnesota. Through 10 starts at the minor league level, Bieber has gone 5-1 with a pristine 1.10 ERA between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus. The Californian kept a 61K:3BB ratio in 65 1/3 innings.
