The Royals profited from a day-off on Sunday as their finale against the Chicago White Sox was postponed due to inclement weather. They begin a six-game road trip after losing their first two games on Thursday and Saturday. They were trounced 14-7 in their home opener then couldn’t hold on to a 3-1 lead as the White Sox rallied in the eighth for 3 runs en route to a 4-3 loss.
The Tigers were also victims of some bad weather as two of their contests had to be postponed against Pittsburgh. They needed to play a doubleheader on Sunday in which they lost the first game 1-0 when they managed only two hits. The Tigers, who lost the opener 13-10 on Friday, also lost 8-6 in the second game of the doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
The Royals, who started their season with two straight losses, enter this affair as a +104 underdog according to BetDSI Sportsbook, with the total sitting at 8.5 runs. RH Jason Hammel (8-13, 5.29 ERA 2017) gets the call for the Royals while veteran LH Francisco Liriano (6-7, 5.66 ERA 2017) is slated to start for the Tigers in the series’ opener.
Hammel may be on his last gasp as a starter as he has struggled mightily in spring training sporting a 0-0 record with a 9.00 ERA in 4 starts with five homeruns allowed in 12 innings. The 35-year old faced the Tigers on five occasions last season and came up with a 1-0 record with a lofty 4.13 ERA. The South Carolina native is 3-2 with a 6.20 ERA in 11-career starts against the Tigers.
After being traded to the Astros on July 31 last season, Liriano’s role was strictly as a reliever where he compiled a 0-2 record with a 4.40 ERA in in 20 trips to the mound. The 34-year old won a spot in the Tigers’ starting rotation after allowing just 4 runs in 16 innings with 17 strikeouts good for a 2.25 ERA. The Dominican is 7-5 with a 4.24 ERA in 16-career starts against the Royals.
