The two division rivals will take part in their third series this season. The Cubs lost the first set 2-1 in the Windy City back in early April but they rebounded in the second series winning two of three in Steel Town a little more than a week ago. The Cubs, who are half a game back of the Brewers in the NL Central, enter this tilt having won 9 of their last 11 games. Meanwhile, the Pirates are heading in the other direction losing 10 of their last 12 contests.
The Cubs, who are in the midst of a six-game home stand, enter this contest as a -164 home favorite, according to Bovada Sportsbook, with the total sitting on 8 runs. RH Chad Kuhl (4-3, 3.86 ERA) will attempt to get back in the win column as he takes the mound for the Pirates while LH Mike Montgomery (1-1, 3.89 ERA) will look to maintain his recent good form as he gets the call in the opener for the Cubs.
Kuhl delivered his fourth quality start in his last five outings in the Pirates’ 3-2 loss to the Cardinals back on Saturday. The 25-year old allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in six frames. Kuhl lost his lone start against the Cubs this year in which he yielded a run on four hits and five strikes in six innings. The Delaware native is 1-5 with a hefty 7.02 ERA in 8-career starts against the Cubs.
Montgomery, who spent most of the season in the bullpen, was sharp in his two starts in replacement of Yu Darvish, who is suffering from a right triceps tendinitis. The 28-year old allowed a run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts is 6 innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Sunday. The California native, who won his lone game of the season against Pittsburgh May 28, is 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA in 2-career starts against the Pirates.
