The two division rivals are taking part in their third series this season. The Cubs lost the first set 2-1 in the Windy City back in early April but they rebounded in the second series winning two of three in Pittsburgh a little more than a week ago. After winning the opener 3-1 on Friday, the Cubs beat the Pirates for the fourth time in five games. Cubs’ starter Jon Lester was brilliant as he threw 7 scoreless innings with just one hit in a 2-0 win on Saturday.
The Cubs, who are in the middle of six-game home stand, enter this affair as a -205 home favorite, according to Bovada Sportsbook, with the total sitting on 9 runs. RH Joe Musgrove (2-1, 1.89 ERA) will attempt to rebound from first loss of the season as he takes the mound for the Pirates while RH Kyle Hendricks (4-5, 3.59 ERA) will look to snap a two-game losing streak as he gets the call in the finale for the Cubs.
Musgrove, who missed the first two months of the season with shoulder issues, lost his first game of the year in his third start for the Pirates. The 25-year old allowed three runs on six hits, which two leaving the yard, with a walk and five strikeouts in five innings in a 5-0 loss to the Dodgers back on Tuesday. The California native, who won his lone start against the Cubs this season, is 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in two-career starts versus Chicago.
Hendricks, who hasn’t allowed more than three runs in ten of his twelve starts, suffered his worst loss of the season in his last trip to the mound. The 28-year old allowed five runs across five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings in a 6-1 defeat to the Phillies on Tuesday. The California native, who lost twice to Pittsburgh this year, is 4-4 with a 3.24 ERA in 12-career starts against the Pirates.
