Athletics Look to Take Series Lead over Rivals Mariners (09/01/2018)
Vegas Odds and MLB Picks: Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics took another step forward by distancing themselves from their closest pursuer for a spot in the AL Wild Card spot by evening the series with the Seattle Mariners on Friday. The two AL West belligerents are scheduled to resume hostilities in the third episode of a four-game series with the contest set to be broadcasted on the MLB TV network Saturday night at 9:05 p.m. ET and live from O.co Coliseum in Oakland, CA.
The Mariners, who aren’t helping their cause for postseason play losing 4 of their last 5 games, enter this affair as a -118 road favorite, thanks to Bovada Sportsbook, with the total set on 8 runs. LH James Paxton (10-5, 3.68 ERA) returns to the starting rotation as he is set to thread the mound for the Mariners while RH Daniel Mengden (6-6, 4.28 ERA) is slated for his first start since June 23 as he gets the call in the second game of the series for the Athletics.
Paxton made it through another bullpen session last Tuesday without any issues. The 29-year old suffered a left forearm contusion when he got struck by a comebacker on August 14 against those same Athletics. The lefty had allowed 8 runs on 17 hits and 13 strikeouts in 13 frames before the injury. The Canada native, who didn’t factor in the decision in his other start vs. Oakland this year, is 3-0 with a 3.50 ERA in 8-career starts against the Athletics.
Mengden is slated to enter the rotation in place of Brett Anderson, who was placed on the disabled list with a forearm strain back on Tuesday. The 25-year old threw four scoreless innings across four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in long relief against the Astros. The Houston native, who boasted a 4-1 dossier with a 2.98 ERA in 9 games for Triple-A Nashville this season, is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in two-career starts against the Mariners.
